For applications requiring up to ~800MB/s user-level bidirectional data rate.

* MPI Pallas benchmark with MPICH-MX/MX between dual-Opteron hosts, including the latency through one switch.

These PCIX-series NICs operate in hosts with 75-133MHz PCI-X slots or 66MHz (3.3V) PCI slots.

Software support for the NICs listed above is available from Myricom and from third parties. The current Myricom software support for the PCIX-series NICs is GM-2 or MX-2G. Please see the Software and Customer Support page for additional information about the software available from Myricom.

These Myrinet/PCI-X NICs are also available as host-card adaptors for the IBM BladeCenter. See this Sept-03 news item for basic information, and contact sales@myri.com for pricing and additional information.

Low-profile PCI-faceplate option: The NICs pictured above have a standard PCI faceplate. Low-profile PCI faceplates are optional at the same price. Please add the suffix "-L" for a low-profile PCI faceplate rather than the standard PCI faceplate.

Memory options: The standard 2MB of fast NIC memory is sufficient for most applications. NICs with 4MB of memory are available on special order. See this table for details, but there is generally no advantage to the 4MB option unless:

Small Switches

16-port Myrinet-2000 switch with Myrinet-Fiber ports and monitoring capability (M3F-SW16M)

Myrinet-2000 switches and switch networks are highly modular, and are normally ordered as enclosure and line-card components (see below). However, the smallest switches can be ordered with single product codes:

8-port switch with Fiber ports M3F-SW8 2U $4,050
8-port switch with Fiber ports and monitoring capability M3F-SW8M 2U $5,025
16-port switch with Fiber ports M3F-SW16 2U $5,625
16-port switch with Fiber ports and monitoring capability M3F-SW16M 2U $6,600

Intermediate-size Switch Networks

Clos network for 128 hosts with all fiber ports and monitoring capability

This family of modular, Myrinet-2000, switch products is recommended for clusters with up to 128 hosts. If your cluster is likely to grow to more than 128 hosts, see also the switch-network products in the following section, which provide higher port density and enterprise features that are not available in this original series of Myrinet-2000 switches.

Please see this Guide to Myrinet-2000 Switches and Switch Networks for additional information for these modular switch and switch-network components:

Product Code Description List Price
Enclosures
M3-E16 2U high enclosure for switches up to 16 ports $1,600
M3-E32 3U high enclosure for switch networks up to 32 ports $3,200
M3-E64 5U high enclosure for switch networks up to 64 hosts $6,400
M3-E128 9U high enclosure for switch networks up to 128 ports $12,800
Line Cards
M3-SW16-8F Line-card switch with 8 Fiber ports on the front panel and 8 SAN ports to the backplane $2,400
M3-SPINE-8F Line-card physical-level converter between 8 Fiber ports on the front panel to the 8 SAN ports on the backplane $1,600
M3-SW16-8E Line-card switch with 8 Gigabit-Ethernet ports on the front panel and 8 SAN ports to the backplane $3,200
M3-M Monitoring line card with dual Ethernet ports (top slot only) $1,000
M3-BLANK Blank front panel $25

These enclosures are complete with power supply, fan cooling, and a backplane, which you can think of as a pre-wired network between the line cards. The backplanes of the M3-E32, M3-E64, and M3-E128 include 16-port crossbar switches that form the Spine of a Clos network. The top slot is reserved for a monitoring line card. The other slots accept port line cards with up to 8 ports on the front panel, and 8 SAN ports that connect to the backplane.

For clusters up to 128 hosts, each M3-SW16-8F or -8E line card provides ports for 8 hosts.

For example, for a 48-host cluster with Myrinet-fiber ports, you would need 6 of the M3-SW16-8F line cards. These 6 line cards would fit in a M3-E64 enclosure; however, if you plan to expand the cluster beyond 64 hosts, you might order an M3-E128 enclosure. The Clos network will have full bisection (maximal throughput) independent of the number of line cards in an enclosure. The M3-M monitoring line card is highly recommended for any large configuration. Be sure to order enough blank front panels to fill all of the enclosure slots. A parts list for this example would be:

1 M3-E64
6 M3-SW16-8F
1 M3-M
2 M3-BLANK

For clusters of 128 or more hosts, please consider the products listed immediately below.

Switch Networks for Large Clusters

This family of Myrinet-2000 switch products is recommended for clusters with 128 or more hosts, or that may grow to this size. These are the switches that are used, for example, in the MareNostrum cluster, the fastest cluster in the world, #5 in the Nov-06 TOP500 list, 2560 IBM JS21 BladeCenter hosts plus 82 additional switch connections to file servers.

These products are highly modular, and include a complete set of enterprise features. Here is a list of all of the available components, with links to descriptions and specifications:

The enclosures provide the mechanical housing, power, cooling, network monitoring, status display, and a backplane into which you can plug up to 21 line cards. The left-most line-card slot is reserved for the M3-MONITOR monitoring line card, which is included with the enclosure. The remaining 20 line-card slots are used for the line cards listed. The monitoring line card and other line cards may be "hot swapped" -- replaced without turning the power off. The dual redundant power supplies (optionally up to 4 power supplies) are also individually hot-swappable. The two fan units, each with dual series fans, are hot-swappable. The rack-mount kit is a pair of telescoping shelf brackets to support the enclosure in standard 19-inch racks. Both for cooling and to contain EMI, any unused line-card slot must contain an M3-AIRDAM blank line card.

Common configurations include:

Configurations for more than 256 hosts up to 512 hosts are a special case. Contact sales@myri.com for efficient implementations.

Configurations of more than 256 hosts using the new Myrinet switches for large clusters employ quad-link ribbon-fiber cables for inter-switch connections. These cables have "MTP" or "MPO" fiber connectors on each end. (MPO and MTP are equivalent. They are two trade names for the same connector.) Just as the single-link Myrinet cables are industry-standard 50/125 multimode duplex cables with LC connectors on each end, these quad-link ribbon-fiber cables are industry-standard cables available from many sources.
